WWE2009


The Department of Physiology, University Colleges of Science and Technology, University of Calcutta, respectively the cradle of Indian Ergonomics and modern Indian science, held the sixth conference on Humanizing Work and Work Environment (HWWE 2009) during December 17-19, 2009. The three day long HWWE 2009 spread over five different locations within the heritage Science and Technology campus had 176 registered participants including 9 delegates from countries like the United States of America, Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan and from different regions of India.

The conference was formally inaugurated on December 17, 2009 at a glittering ceremony by the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the host University, Prof.Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay (above). Prof.Eric Min–Yang Wang, Secretary General, International Ergonomics Association graced the Inaugural Ceremony. The organizing Secretary Dr.Somnath Gangopadhyay (below) welcomed the delegates.

ISE President Prof.Gaur G. Ray (Head, Ergonomics, Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay) and ISE General Secretary Dr.Dhurjati Majumdar (Additional Director, DIPAS, DRDO, Ministry of Defense, Government of India) spoke on the behalf of ISE. Prof.A.M.Chandra, President HWWE 2009 and Prof.T.K.Ghosh, Head, Department of Physiology, University of Calcutta also addressed the gathering. 

An exhibition (below) organized as a part of the conference was formally inaugurated by Prof.Eric Min –Yang Wang, Secretary General, International Ergonomics Association (above).

There were 2 memorial orations, 12 theme lectures, 22 lead lectures, and a Panel Discussion on ‘Development of Ergonomics in Developing Countries’ apart from oral and poster presentations.

The 6th Prof.Haripada Chattopadhyay memorial oration (below) was delivered by Prof.Verna Blewett, Occupational Health and Safety wing, University of South Australia on "Ergonomics is for Everyone".

The 2nd Prof.Sacchidananda Bandyopadhyay memorial oration (below) was delivered by Dr.P.K.Nag, Director, National Institute of Occupational Health, India on "Health Impacts of Climate Change".

142 papers were presented over seven scientific sessions on Ergonomics in Occupational Health and Safety, Ergonomics in Organized and Unorganized Sectors, Ergonomics in Intervention and Design, Ergonomics in Agriculture, Ergonomics in Sports, Work and Exercise Physiology, Disability and Design Ergonomics and Ergonomics for Women at Work. In Poster sessions a total of 34 posters were presented.

The Theme Speakers included Dr.Kazutaka Kogi (Institute for Science of Labor, Japan), Prof.G.G.Ray(IIT Bombay, India), Dr.Dhurjati Majumdar (DIPAS, DRDO, India) (below), Dr,Wen Ruey Chang (Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety, USA), Dr.Wendy Mcdonald (Centre for Ergonomics and Human Factors, La Trobe University, Australia), Prof.Biman Das  (Dalhousie University, Canada), Prof.Debkumar Chakraborty (IIT Guwahati, India), Prof.B.N.Lahiri (Jadavpur University, India), Dr.A.K.Ganguli (BHEL, India).

There were 22 lead lectures. Dr.R.M.Maikala (Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety, USA), Dr.Arijit Sengupta (New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ, USA), P.C.Ghosh (CLI, India), Prof.P.K.Ray, Dr.J.Maity (IIT Kharagpur, India), Prof.Amit Ray (IIITDM, Jabalpur), Prof.K.Kathirvel (TNAU, Coimbatore), Dr.Devasish Sen (Presidency College, Kolkata), Dr.T.Pachal (BSP, Jharkhand), Dr.V.Balasubramanian (IIT Madras), Dr.S.M Sane (VIT, Pune), Dr.S.Gandhi (CCS HAU, Haryana), Dr.S.Mukherjee, Dr.R.Iqbal (NITIE) were some of the notable lead speakers. 

Pre- and Post- Conference Workshops were held, (in collaboration with UGC –Academic Staff College, University of Calcutta) on Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (conducted by Dr.Deepak Sharan with 51 participants) (below) .

and Participatory Ergonomics: how to ensure everyone has a say… (below)  (conducted by Prof.Verna Blewett with 42 participants, ably assisted by her daughter Lily), respectively.

A cultural programme featuring an almost eight hundred years old traditional Indian folk song and dance form was presented by Kendriya Bratachari Nayak Mandali (below).

At the Valedictory Session on December 19, 2009, the awards for the best student presentations were annouced. Ms.Vasundhara Pandey of NITIE (below) won the award for oral presentation,

while Mr.Pathikrit Bandyopadhyay of Jadavpur University (below) was adjudged to have made the best poster presentation.

Finally, Dr.Somnath Gangopadhyay, Organizing Secretary, HWWE 2009, handed over the formal mantle of HWWE (below) to Dr.V.Balasubramanian, representative of IIT Madras, where HWWE 2010 is scheduled to be held.

The Annual General Meeting of the Indian Society of Ergonomics was also held during the HWWE 2009, on 17th December 2009 (below). Prof.Eric Min –Yang Wang, IEA Secretary-General, was a special invitee.

Founder member Dr.Kazutaka Kogi (below) also attended the meeting and participated actively.
